Building heritage
According to the Land Use and Building Act and the
Building Protection Act, the responsibility of expert
tasks pertaining to the care of the building heritage
belongs to the National Board of Antiquities. Satakunta
Museum has since 1990 employed a building researcher. In
1996 the museum signed a contract with the National
Board of Antiquities, which transferred responsibility
for most of such tasks on the museum's territory to
Satakunta Museum.

Consulting
Satakunta Museum provides advice for the public in
questions related to the care of the building heritage
and the cultural environment and the history of the
manmade environment in Satakunta mainly by telephone. If
necessary, the building researcher will visit the site
to assess the cultural history value of the building or
the manmade environment mainly to establish its need of
protection and the principles to best repair a
historically valuable building.

How are buildings protected
Buildings are protected in Finland mainly under the Land
Use and Building Act in various plans (town plan, shore
plan, disposition plan, general plan, general shore plan).
If a building cannot be protected in the plan, the
building can also be protected under the Building
Protection Act, which means making a building
preservation order. For more details on the protection
of buildings see the web sites of the Ministry of the
Environment and the National Board of Antiquities. You
can inquire the cultural history value of buildings from
Satakunta Museum. To determine the value of buildings,
municipalities have taken inventories of buildings under
the guidance of the museum since early 1990s.
