Satakunta Museum
Satakunta Museum collects and researches the material
and mental cultural heritage of its territory, that is,
the current Satakunta region, and documents the cultural
environment of the area. The museum also has its own
publications.
The museum preserves, maintains and exhibits the
material in its collections, which is thus made publicly
available. The museum’s collections of objects and
photographs are extensive and widely representative of
the life and culture in the area.
The museum cooperates with researchers, schools and
other educational institutions.
As a regional museum Satakunta Museum offers local
museums in the area many types of expert services. It is
also responsible for expert tasks related to the
research and protection of building heritage on its
territory.
History of the Museum
| 1888 |
Satakunta
Museum was established
by the Porin Suomalainen
Seura (Finnish
Association of Pori).
The collection of
objects started
immediately.

| 1899 |
Satakunta
Museum was taken over by
the City of Pori. In
this way the City of
Pori assumed
responsibility for the
preservation of local
history.

| 1903 |
The
museum moved to Iltama
house, so-called old
museum, which is still
remembered by many
residents of Pori.

| 1958 |
The
first curator with an
academic education was
appointed.
|
| 1973 |
The
new building for the
Satakunta Museum was
completed on a plot at
the southern bank of the
Kokemäenjoki river. At
that time it was a rare
modern building
originally designed to
be used as a museum.

| 1980 |
The
museum was appointed as
the Satakunta County
Museum, and its regional
territory was defined to
include mainly
historical
Ala-Satakunta.

| 1996 |
The
museum signed a contract
with the National Board
of Antiquities on the
research and protection
of the building heritage.
According to the
contract the Museum
assumes responsibility
for most of such tasks
on its territory.

| 2002 |
When
the renovation of the
museum was completed the
new permanent exhibition
‘Vesien sylistä
Satakunnaksi’ was
opened. |
