Satakunta Museum and Prehistoric times

Satakunta Museum has a solid tradition of archaeological research and remarkable archaeological collections; next to the collections of the National Museum we have the second largest Stone-Age collection. This collection was founded in the late 19th century, when teacher Matti Kauppinen and Aleksander Winter started the collection of items for the museum. Individual sets of items include the stone objects and ceramics of Uotinmäki in Kiukainen. Kauppinen made this important prehistoric site known to researchers. In addition, the collection contains a number of findings from the excavations made by the museum.

The most well-known of the Bronge Age dwellings in Satakunta is probably Rieskaronmäki in Nakkila, where professor Unto Salo who served as the curator of the Museum During 1958-72, made excavations in the 1960. Excavations on the site of the medieval town of Ulvila were made during 1973-77. Ulvila is the only medieval town in Finland with some remnants preserved beneath unbuilt areas. At present the site is mainly fields. The museum conducted this research together with the Department of Cultural Studies of the University of Turku.

If you find a prehistoric item or site, please report it either to the National Board of Antiquities or Satakunta Museum.
