Porin Lyseo is one of the oldest Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools in Finland. It was founded in 1879. The original site plan has grown into a modern education complex of four buildings. The oldest building was completed in 1895. The school buildings were renovated in 1995-2002.
Our school is located adjacent to Pori's historic centre. The interior arrangement can offer educational facilities for different schools and extra-curricular activities. The downtown site of Porin Lyseo provides easy access to municipal cultural services. The city of Pori has become famous for its annual jazz festival in July. The festival is considered one of the best in Europe. The former students of Porin Lyseo played an important role in starting this world-famous jazz festival more than 50 years ago.
In 1558, Juhana, the Duke of Finland decided to establish a trading town on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. Pori is a regional centre for trade, shipping and industry with a population of 85 000. The traditions of this school are still strong. The active network of the alumni is willing to contribute to the development of Porin Lyseo. The Matriculation Examination is currently under a process of digitalisation. The nongraded system of upper secondary school was introduced as early as at the beginning of the 1995-1996 school year.
PORIN LYSEON LUKIO is a non-graded upper secondary school. The age bracket of students is 16-18 years on average. The total enrolment varies from 490 to 500. The syllabus consists of compulsory courses, specialization courses, and applied courses. The new concepts of self-assessment, self-study, and distance teaching are being taken into use. We attempt to provide time-tabling to our students through computer scheduling.
Porin Lyseon Lukio has specialized in business education, drama studies and environmental studies. But we are keen to preserve our classical traditions. We offer Latin courses as well. We are actively seeking different partnerships. The aspects of the EU has being taken in our study programme. The courses in Computer Studies enable students to improve their skills. Our connections make it possible to participate in cross-cultural international projects. The variety of educational opportunities offered at Porin Lyseo can provide a basis for the academic and personal growth, which is so vital to a well-rounded education.
Our new study program in English started in the beginning of the term 2018 – 2019. The class is studying both in English and in Finnish. The obligatory courses will be taught mainly in English except the lessons in Finnish (alternatively Finnish as mother tongue or Finnish as a second language for foreigners) and foreign languages. The study counseling is also available in English. The matriculation examination will be completed in Finnish.
