Kävelykatu city promenade turns 50 in 2027 – and we want to hear your ideas on how to celebrate!

Pori’s city promenade Kävelykatu will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. The anniversary year is a shared opportunity for the city, local entrepreneurs and residents to highlight the promenade and its potential. All citizens are invited to help plan the well-deserved celebration, either via a newly opened online survey or in person during the Taiteiden Yö (night of the arts) on Saturday, August 16.

Pori’s city promenade Kävelykatu will proudly turn 50 in 2027! Finland’s first pedestrian street established through an official town plan will be celebrated in many ways throughout the year. Planning for the anniversary year is already underway, and a project plan is in preparation.

The city now invites all residents of Pori, and anyone else interested, to join in the anniversary planning.

– The main theme for the anniversary year will be community, as our goal is to make the promenade a welcoming, shared space for everyone all year round, says project manager Sari Kivioja.

Leave your ideas online, in person, or during the Night of the Arts

You can take part in the planning in whatever way suits you best — by submitting your ideas online or in person this coming weekend, which is also when Taiteiden Yö takes place.

  • The online idea board is open from August 13 to 17 at pori.fi/kavis50.
  • You can share ideas in person on Friday, August 15 from 14:30 to 16:30 in the lobby of the Promenadikeskus, where project manager Sari Kivioja will be present.
  • On Saturday, Taiteiden Yö (night of the arts) is happening throughout the city centre with a rich cultural programme. Some venues will also have idea boards for sharing your thoughts and ideas on how to make the anniversary year one to remember.

Taiteiden Yö programme highlights:

  • Children’s Culture Centre Kruunupää offers a continuous short film screening for youth and adults from 18:00 to 20:00.
  • Pori Sinfonietta will hold two free 30-minute mini-concerts at 18:00 and 20:00 in the Promenadikeskus lobby, where visitors can also find ticket deals and CD sales.
  • Pori Art Museum will be open from 10:00 to 20:00, offering sensory experiences and small interactive activities alongside its exhibitions.

You can find the full programme of Taiteiden Yö here (in Finnish).

– Some idea boards might be available even before Taiteiden Yö begins. Remember that the anniversary will be celebrated all year, so we welcome ideas for all seasons, Kivioja adds.
